Salaam alaikum

SubhanAllah, I love how along with tafsir of the ayat we are also given such vivid imagery from the language. This reinforces my belief that the benefits of learning the language of Quran are endless.

We should reflect some more on this, and realize that perhaps we are more than "men" or "women" or at least we should strive to be more than that. Our characters and lives amount to the sum of our relationships (well kept/destroyed) and our actions.

WA'salaam

"When I think of Umm Jamil, I would think of an old hag looking woman but when I read this ayah, I was amazed.Jeed is not an old wrinkly neck, rather it is a neck that is slender, long and very beautiful. This beautiful neck of hers that wore gold and jewelry will have a twisted rope of palm fiber."

- ^ SubhanAllah that is such an insightful observation. It kind of reminds me of the evil stepmother in Snow White, you know? What good will Umm Jamil's beauty be, the beauty which is encompassed by the results of her deeds -> a rope of fiber. SubhanAllah. It's a reminder to make du'a to Allah (swt) to make our inner appearances and character good as He has beautified our outside appearance. The du'a from Hisnul Muslim is:

"Allahuma hassin khulqee kama hassanta khalqee."
Translation: Oh Allah! As you have beautified my outer image, beautify my inner image.
(Ahmad, 403/1)

- Also the difference between zawj and imra'a truly shows the magnificent eloquence of the Book of Allah (swt).

- Finally, it's so interesting how Umm Jamil used to carry wood in this life and in the hereafter, Allah has promised it for her but in a worse way. It makes me think that, subhanAllah, the way a person is, Allah (swt) will use that to honor that person OR debase that very person. Our actions and personality are, indeed, really, really important.

And Allah (swt) knows best.
Current score: 0 (to vote for this comment, please visit the site)
